ESB Networks’ published development plans identify widespread uprating of substations and overhead lines through 2040, alongside recognised supply chain challenges across the network. IPW supports the contractors delivering these programmes: substation steelwork fabricated and hot-dip galvanized in Cork, and overhead line hardware supplied to specification, all from a single Irish site. The same planning documents confirm the network is moving beyond the creosote wood pole. Composite poles have been supplied to every region in the country, installation in designated situations is becoming a business-as-usual activity, and framework procurement has reached completed tender documentation. Behind this sits a fixed regulatory date: the EU derogation permitting new creosote poles expires in October 2029, with over 2.2 million creosote-treated poles on the Irish network.

Composite poles carry different hardware requirements. Attachment methods, banding, brackets and pole-top assemblies developed for wood do not transfer directly to composite sections. IPW holds overhead line hardware for composite pole applications within the same Cork stockholding, and can review contractor schedules against the pole manufacturer’s fitting requirements at enquiry stage.
